Substructure Demonstrates Advanced Hydrographic Survey Techniques
Substructure welcomed engineers, scientists, researchers, and regulators aboard its custom-designed survey vessel Orion February 14-18 to learn about hydrographic surveying technologies and to experience Orion’s unparalleled hydrographic surveying capabilities. During the demonstrations, Orion also was used to complete a post-construction multibeam survey of a local Navy drydock and to acquire extensive sensor calibration and test data for a research scientist from the University of New Hampshire Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping/Joint Hydrographic Center.
Images generated from data collected aboard Orion during the demonstrations included an overhead hillshade view of a portion of Long Bridge, between Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and Kittery, Maine, based on a half-foot average grid created from R2Sonic Sonic 2024 multibeam data (below).
The dataset used for the Long Bridge image was created from just a couple of passes with Orion along both sides of the bridge. This view clearly shows the extent of a seafloor mound on the upriver side of the center support, as well as numerous cables running between and adjacent to the structural supports. Substructure completed a major underwater power cable repair on this bridge during the winter of 2008.
Substructure also generated a rotated hillshade view of a Portsmouth, New Hampshire, marine terminal facility on the Piscataqua River, based on a half-foot average grid created from R2Sonic Sonic 2024 multibeam data (below).
The dataset used for this image of the riverbed in and around this marine terminal was created from multiple passes of Orion parallel to and at increasing distances from the shore-side facility. This view shows the three cellular cofferdam mooring structures, as well as the sheet pile retaining wall associated with the mooring facility. Substructure completed a major design/build rehabilitation of one of these cellular mooring structures during the summer of 2009.
Substructure’s next on-the-water demonstrations aboard Orion will take place during the International Bridge Conference (June 5-8, Pittsburgh) and EnergyOcean International (June 14-16, Portland, Maine). Contact Substructure for additional information and signup instructions.
